With almost 4,000 units produced, the Prussian P 8, later classified as the 38 series, went down in history as one of the most numerous steam locomotives ever. After the turmoil of the two world wars, they were in use by almost all European railway administrations. In Austria, five locomotives ultimately remained and formed the ÖBB series 638.
